How to prepare your EV for winter?

In Nachricht 0 Kommentare

Winter is approaching, and it can be challenging for electric vehicles. Drivers also face specific problems when it comes to maintaining their EVs' efficiency and performance in cold weather. Weather, climate temperature, cargo, aerodynamics, and speed of traffic have dramatic impacts on EV range. Getting your EV ready for winter is crucial to maximize its safety, performance, and longevity. The following tips will help you prepare your EV for winter to achieve optimal performance.

Optimize Your Battery Charge Routine

It's crucial to establish an optimized charging routine because EV's range can be reduced by more than 30% due to increased energy demands. Charge your EV overnight in an environment where temperatures are more stable. Preconditioning is essential, as it allows the interior of the car to heat up without draining the battery. You can extend your car’s range by remote starting the vehicle for approximately 30 minutes before unplugging it from the power source.

Use Winter Tires

Winter tires provide better traction, handling, and braking on snow and ice, which not only improves safety but also results in temporarily reduced regenerative braking power.

Watch Out For Mirrors And Windshield

Water from melting snow and ice can work into mirrors, freezing up, and mirrors can break. In harsh climates, ensure that the wiper blades are not frozen or adhered to the windshield. Remove ice from the windshield before using the wipers. Ice has sharp edges that can damage the rubber on the blades.

Know Your Car's Winter Settings

Make sure you know how to adjust relevant weather driving settings in your car and lower the amount of regenerative braking to help prevent your car from sliding. Using heated seats will lower your car's overall energy usage which will let your car go further.
